Diversity and Empowerment Student Organization (DESO)
The College of Education and Human Ecology

History is OUR STORIES of building up this community for diversity and empowerment.

History

  Year Quarter Our Stories
2005-2006 Autumn There are many professors and administrators who work and teach for diversity and empowerment. Nevertheless,  many students still want to have authentically diverse environment in which we feel safe and strong.

Two doctoral students in Edu: T&L (Mariela Herrera and Detra Price-Dennis) and Dr. Tyson discussed the need of forming a "student" organization for diversity enhancement, professional development and social action. During this quarter, Sung Choon and Detra developed a draft of our constitution, came up with activities we would do as a student organization, advertised the organization to students in the COE, recruited officers and  members.

Our goal for this year was to make the CEDESO visible and audible.

Winter We registered our organization (The College of Education Diversity and Empowerment Student Organization: CEDESO) as an official OSU student organization in January, 2006.

On Feb 22, 2006, we had our first general assembly in which we elected 5 officers who are Mariela Herrera (President from Edu: T&L), Tiffany Jenkins (Vice-president from Edu: PAES) and Raeal Moore (Vice-president from Edu: P&L), Detra Price-Dennis (Secretary), and Julio Olivo (Treasurer).

During this quarter we tried to collect as many student voices as possible and came up with the opinion box idea. Peter Lund, a doctoral student in T&L, and William Gossard, a technology administrator in 020 RA, helped us develop the opinion box.

Spring Our officers and members worked hard to advertise the CEDESO to all students and faculty in the COE by passing out approximately 1000 copies of fliers to people inside and outside the educational buildings at OSU. Hye Kyung Lee, a doctoral student in P&L, helped us make the big laminated signs for the CEDESO. Leila Ba served as vice president for the unexpired one-year term because Tiffany resigned her officership due to her internship at other institution.

At our meeting on May 3, 2006, we had a multicultural book fair and gave multicultural books for children and young adult to students in the COE. The books were donated by Dr. Tyson.

2006-2007 Autumn This year's goal is to make the DESO in action. As the name of the College has changed as the College of Education and Human Ecology, our name became the College of Education and Human Ecology Diversity and Empowerment Student Organization. We decided to abbreviate our acronym from the CEDESO/CEHEDESO to "DESO."

Mariela Herrera developed our websites and worked as Webmaster as well as President.  Other officers are Raeal (Vice-president), Detra Price-Dennis (Secretary), and Leila Ba (Treasurer). We will elect or nominate another vice-president from Edu: PAES in our meeting on Oct 4, 2006.
